New MAN V8-1200 diesel engine for yachts and pleasure craft
MAN Engines & Components is presenting the new V8-1200 for yachts and pleasure craft in the 50 to 60 foot class. At the 40th boot in Düsseldorf the 1 200 hp diesel engine (882 kW) will make its first public appearance. MAN successfully launched its V12-1800 four months back.
- Powerful and compact – MAN V8-1200 for pure pleasure in motion
- Consistent and innovative – new V-engines expand the MAN selection
MAN V8-1200 for yachts and pleasure craft
The appearance of the V8-1200 marks a logical addition to the selection of V-engines from the Engines & Components division of MAN Nutzfahrzeuge AG. With its 1 200 hp (882 kW) the 8-cylinder offers superb acceleration for yachts and pleasure craft in the 50 to 60 foot class. Maximum torque of 4 000 Nm at as low as 1 200 rpm sends a yacht into the planing phase fast, achieving high speeds in next to no time. Optimal design of the dynamic V8 engine enables it to maintain 1 200 hp (882 kW) performance from 2 100 through 2 350 rpm. Here MAN engineers have demonstrated in unequalled fashion that a powerful engine can be both lightweight and compact. At 1.56 kilograms per horsepower, the new V8-1200 is even lighter in relation to power than existing MAN V-engines for virtually unaltered dimensions.
Clever solutions combine with advanced technologies for a new V-engine generation
The new V12-1800 made its market debut four months ago. Together with the freshly launched V8-1200, MAN is now able to offer marine diesel engines of leading-edge technology that mark the start of a wholly new V-engine generation. Power, compactness and smooth running are the hallmark features of these modern engines. To achieve features like these, MAN's engineers further developed the V-series throughout.
Both engines feature second-generation common-rail injection and two-stage turbocharging. High performance plus exemplary exhaust emission figures are the result, surely maintaining international standards. The injection system has an extremely positive effect on the steadiness of the engine, adding comfort to enjoyment in motion. Engine components must be a match for the increasing demands – gas pressure up to 240 bar, injection pressure of 1 600 bar, and constant power between 2 100 and 2 350 rpm call for the use of extremely high-strength materials such as steel pistons, and create an innovative engine design. For the first time the bedplate concept is used here for yacht engines. This bedplate replaces the single bearing caps of the crankshaft, and plays a major part in reinforcing the crank case and minimizing noise emission.
Both engines come with an SAE1 flywheel case to save space and weight. Cooling is by a plate heat exchanger, which allows flexible configuration of the cooling system. An advantage in engine installation by a boat builder is the modified exhaust system with a central gas outlet. All parts needing maintenance such as fuel and oil filters are arranged for ease of access. The water pump is driven by a gear instead of a belt.
The new MAN V-engines V8-1200 and V12-1800 will be on show at boot in Düsseldorf from 17 through 25 January, 2009.

MAN engines for yachts and pleasure craft
For yachts and pleasure craft in the classes 50 to 86 feet MAN offers powerful and compact diesel engines producing 730 hp (537 kW) to 1 800 hp (1 324 kW). The 6-cylinder inline engines are characterized by powerful acceleration and extremely economical fuel consumption. The special advantages of the V-engines are excellent power yield plus compact dimensions. The engines are shipped ready for incorporation, and are optimally designed for the particular application and its operating conditions. Following installation, MAN will undertake inspection plus acceptance and full first-time startup of an engine. A Gold Standard certificate for engine acceptance is an extra guarantee for the boat owner. All engines comply with international exhaust standards.
